A newly published book shows football matches played behind prison walls as the most important sporting force for transforming 1960s South Africa from an apartheid state into a multiracial democracy. For several political prisoners, soccer “gave us a chance to practise how we would run the country – how you organise things, treat people with respect, ensure justice and reconcile differences.”
