THE WASHINGTON POST: THE TRUTH ABOUT FORGIVENESS
On March 22, 2009, The Washington Post analyzed truth and reconciliation in Baltimore. Karen Houppert of The Washington Post interviewed Bernard Williams, a man who lost his son to gun violence in Baltimore 15 years ago. The article discusses the mindset of the boy’s father now and how he wishes he could confront his son’s killer. He ended up confronting Norman, his son’s killer, to obtain closure years later.
Question to the Blogosphere: What other examples can you think of of people who struggle to put conflicts behind them? Do you think Beethoven’s mother, Diane, was a spoiler in the efforts Bernard made to get past the death of his son? Do you think it is possible to forgive a murderer of someone you love? What implications does this local example of the struggle for peace have for international conflict resolution, in which participants often must negotiate with people they see as responsible for the deaths of loved ones?
