March 6 saw the first parliamentary session to take place in Kenya since the historic peace deal was made between former political rivals, President Mwai Kibaki and Prime minister elect Raila Odinga. Kibaki opened the session with a minute’s silence for the victims of Kenya’s recent violence and called on the divided house to set aside partisanship and draw upon their goodwill, unity, good faith and integrity in order to begin a new era of peace and stability.

The reintegration of Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans into American society after their traumatic experiences of conflict is proving to be an increasingly important issue. Not only with the attention being paid in Washington D.C to the issue of mental health and high suicide rates, as noted in earlier entries on this blog, but now the Christian Science Monitor points to education programs that are another crucial feature of this broader reintegration program.
Dartmouth College is at the forefront of this effort to guide wounded veterans through the college process.

Women leaders from 45 nations are meeting in India this week to discuss their role in conflict resolution at the “Making Way for the Feminine,” a five-day conference that began Thursday in Jaipur.

It is part of an effort to celebrate International Women’s Day. However, “This is not about empowering women,” says Dena Merriam, who organized the conference and also co-chaired the United Nations’ Millennium World Peace Summit in 2000, “It is about how women can transform society to help us find new ways of addressing conflict.”
