Leadership with Compassion in Indonesia

Positions and interests demonstrated by spicy food. (Hearts and peppers added later)

The conflict was simple, she liked spicy food and her husband did not. But the iceberg principle, a fundamental aspect of the common ground approach, could not leave it there. The principle compels people to looks beyond positions (the tip of the iceberg) to get to interests—the things that are satisfied when the position is met, and the ingredients for collaborative problem-solving.

Shawn Dunning, Director of SFCG’s Leadership Wisdom Initiative, recently conducted a training workshop for women Indonesian trainers and facilitators. They began with an exercise to illustrate the iceberg theory, using real examples from the women’s lives.  Soon they were talking about the culinary conundrum of one woman’s desire for a little kick on her palate. Getting beyond her position (the desire for spicy food), she went into the reasons for her preference: It increases your appetite, she said, and makes you more productive. It’s good for health…and then she blushed and giggled. “What?” they wanted to know; what was the next reason? She shook her head coyly, “secret,” she said. The rest of the women burst into knowing laughter. read more…

Happy International Women’s Day

Sudanese women displaying their brilliance

While the last 100 years have brought huge progress to some people in some places some of the time, this 100th anniversary of International Women’s Day also reminds us of the vast inequities that exist around the world today, and the difficulties that women and girls face worldwide.

At SFCG we bring a gendered lens to all the work we do, making certain to engage women and make sure their voices are heard. Here are just three of the many projects we are doing around the world to engage with women as peace builders.

I do not wish them to have power over men, but over themselves.  ~Mary Wollstonecraft read more…

Shay Banks-Young, Julia Jefferson Westerinen & David Works take the stage at the 2010 Common Ground Awards

In November of last year, we honored three descendants of Thomas Jefferson and his slave, Sally Hemings at the Common Ground Awards. Their story, of how they overcame centuries of distrust to find their own common ground was recently featured on CBN, to coincide with Black History Month. Theirs is the story of America’s complicated and tragic racial history and its implications are broader than any single family.

Correspondent  John Jessup sat down to speak with, Shay Banks-Young, Julia Jefferson Westerinen and David Works to  speak about the inspiring story of how they managed to come together.

The Man He Killed

Had he and I but met
By some old ancient inn,
We should have set us down to wet
Right many a nipperkin!

But ranged as infantry,
And staring face to face,
I shot at him as he at me,
And killed him in his place.

I shot him dead because—
Because he was my foe,
Just so: my foe of course he was;
That’s clear enough; although

He thought he’d ‘list, perhaps,
Off-hand like—just as I—
Was out of work—had sold his traps—
No other reason why.

Yes; quaint and curious war is!
You shoot a fellow down
You’d treat, if met where any bar is,
Or help to half a crown.
