Compassion and forgiveness in Sri Lanka
A Sri Lankan columnist in the Asian Tribune pleads for the feuding factions – the LTTE terrorists, the Opposition parties, the Tamil diaspora – to arrive, at long last, at a peace situated on compassion and forgiveness. The writer hails comments given by Eastern Province Chief Minister Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan, a former LTTE terrorist who has joined mainstream democratic politics because of his perceived common ground with President Rajapakse. The Chief Minister described an encounter with a young Sinhala woman who saved his life when he was still a terrorist: “Her reply made me speechless. Her husband was killed by the LTTE and she was still offering the terrorists food and drinks.”
